CFA111: Product Design

A web based retail company has asked you to come up with new ideas for products aimed at the college student market.  The company has an active and growing business in college textbooks. They feel the visibility they already have with this market sector, and the widespread acceptance of e-commerce among students, provides an opportunity for other parallel markets.

Specifically they would like to explore the potential for creating a new website – Dormroom.com – that sells “designer” dorm room accessories. There are already a number of products aimed at this market – backrest pillows, note and tack-boards, closet organizers to name a few. While Dormroom.com intends to sell these items as well, they want to make their entry into this market with a line of products that are seen as novel in design and unique in their utility.  They would like to gain the reputation of being the website that prospective college students go to first because their stuff is “different” and just looks cool (hot? neat?  rad? awesome?).

Dormroom.com GroupThe company would like your design team to generate a number of alternative product ideas in a short brainstorming session. They would also like you to identify the one you feel has the greatest market potential and develop more detailed design sketch for this product.  In some respects though the ultimate viability of the products you come up with in the next hour is less important than demonstrating that your team has the collective talent to create new product lines that can establish Dormroom.com’s position in the market.
